SNES vs. Genesis: Part 1 – Dueling Contras

Both systems had their own exclusive installment in the Contra series. Which one is the best?

Contra III: The Alien Wars

Released in 1992 for the SNES, Contra III was the actually the fourth installment in the series [Operation C on the Gameboy was actually third] and had a decidedly post-apocalyptic feel, perhaps inspired by the same year’s released of Terminator 2. The game has a very fast-paced feel to it as the player character moves quickly through levels populated by cannon fodder that rangers from armed men, mutant dogs, giant robots, and other monstrosities. Powerups rain from the sky, giving you a nice range of choice of weaponry. There’s also other powerups like a shield and bombs which destroy everything on screen. Some levels are actually top-down shooters where you use the L and R buttons to turn left and right, it’s a bit confusing at first, but the first boss battle in this view was pretty awesome. Contra III is difficult, like the first game, but manageable for the most part.

Contra: Hard Corps

Released in 1994 for the Genesis, Hard Corps actually features selectable characters and a branching storyline. In terms of gameplay, however, it feels much more like a throwback to the original rather than an evolution. Contra: Hard Corps is very true to its name being quite difficult, even more so than Contra III. It’s easy to get killed multiple times making your way through the first area. But, having said that, it’s still a pretty cool game. It’s got a sense of scale and fast-paced action that every bit as good as Contra III in many ways. The graphics aren’t quite as detailed as in Contra III, but it does make up for that by having some interesting things going on graphically like huge explosions, a massive boss, and a lot of animation in the enemies. It can be very frustrating at times, but, if you can get the hang of it, it’s a great entry to the series.

SNES just barely edges past the Genesis in this round, though perhaps not if you play the Japanese version of Hard Corps [which is easier, but all in Japanese].
